Ayres Adventures Tour Classifications

Before committing to book a tour, riders want to know what type of riding to expect. Our Adventure Classification System provides a precise description of the type of riding that will be encountered on each of our tours.
Our classification system identifies the percentage of a tour that is characterized by a particular category of riding. Categories are:

Paved Green Paved roads, very tame, mostly straight and level. Suitable for riders of all levels.
Challenging White Paved roads with good road conditions and some hills and mountains, generally with "sweepers". Common in the Andes Mountains in South America and in South Africa. Suitable for novice riders and more experienced riders as well.

Challenging Yellow Paved roads with frequent changes in elevation and tight turns. Common in the Alps and in New Zealand. Best ridden by experienced riders who enjoy the twisties.
Gravel White Unpaved roads which are primarily straight and level and which are composed of good, hard packed gravel. These are "non-technical" roads which are suitable for riders with limited experience on unpaved roads. Typically encountered on our tours through Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego and on optional routes in South Africa and South America.
Gravel Plus Unpaved roads which present some technical challenges due to poor surface conditions and/or frequent changes in elevation, including narrow roads and tight turns. Common on trips such as Prudhoe Bay Excursion and some roads in the Namibian deserts. Best ridden only by experienced riders who enjoy leaving the pavement behind.
Traffic White Some wildlife occasionally seen, but wildlife is not a predominant feature of the tour. Traffic Yellow Wildlife is often seen during the tour and is one of the tour's major attractions.
Traffic White Some urban traffic. Typically encountered when leaving the starting point of a tour, or when arriving at the final destination city during a tour. Suitable for novice riders. Traffic Yellow Heavy urban traffic. Typically encountered in major European cities, such as Athens, Munich or Rome. Best ridden by experienced riders.

The above classifications are used on our web site and other printed materials to characterize the nature of each tour. The Plan Ahead booklets also use the following symbols for the daily itineraries to alert riders to special situations or road conditions.
