Exploring Nizhny Novgorod. No history of any period of Russia, from Kievan Rus’, through the era of Muscovite rule, to the Communist period, would be complete without the involvement of people from the province. The region was a stronghold of patriotism, a powerful center of trade and enterprise, the birthplace of many famous Russian industries and a cradle of the natural sciences and culture.

In many cities statues and monuments of Vladimir Lenin, the revolutionary and leader of the Russian SFSR, still remain, and some new ones have been erected.

A local friendly man asked to post his photo on the Internet. There were many people who have never seen foreigners in their life.

Note by one of our riders Randy McClanahan:

Like most places, not every church is maintained. Not sure if this one was replaced or not. We see abandoned Russian Orthodox churches frequently in the small villages.

In many small towns there is a statue of Mr. Lenin in the town square. This one was an easy photograph. Looking forward to learning more about what the people think of him today.

Also, the recruiting posters suggest that the military is still a good option for a small town kid trying to get off the farm.

Finally, a shot of the main pedestrian mall walkway at dinner time. Feels a lot like most other similar spots in the west. But this one is in a city of 1.3 million people as we journey deeper into the heart of mother Russia!

Kazan tomorrow!
