We were treated to a great morning of blue skies and fresh crisp air as we left Reykjavik this morning for our first days ride of our Iceland Adventure! We quickly got rid of the first few miles of pavement with a short stretch of highway before turning off on to a smaller single lane side road as we made our way to Pingvellir for our first stop! Þingvellir is a site of historical, cultural, and geological importance. It lies in a rift valley that marks the crest of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.

Shortly after this stop we hit our first section of gravel, the first few miles of which had recently been resurfaced with a couple of inches of stone chip gravel – it certainly made for an interesting start to the ride as the bikes slid and weaved along the road. Fortunately it did not last long and soon enough we were on some incredible hard pack gravel roads with scenery around us that only Iceland could make so beautiful.

The temperature dropped a little as we went up in elevation and got closer to several glaciers. As we dropped down in altitude, the temperature increased and we were all more than comfortable by the time we stopped for a wonderful lunch. Tonight we will stay in Borgarnes were we will enjoy a wonderful dinner at a local restaurant over looking the ocean!

Great first day to our Iceland Adventure.
